Donations From South Carolina Hunt Will Feed More Than 3,100 This Holiday Season
Bogart, Ga. – Hunters harvested and donated enough venison and pork to feed 3,145 people this holiday season during a December hunt sponsored by the Quality Deer Management Association and the Outdoor Marketing Group.
The hunt, which took place in December at The Millaree Plantation, near Columbia, S.C., is an annual event the brings together folks from leading hunting and outdoor companies, media members, OMG staffers and QDMA staff and volunteers. Hunters harvested and donated 22 deer and three wild hogs this year, which provided 500 pounds of venison and 129 pounds of pork to local food banks.
The OMG/QDMA Hunt annually provides a chance for outdoor-industry and media representatives to spend a few days in a relaxed hunting camp and unwind from their busy work schedules. They also help the host landowner – in this case, longtime QDMA member Marion Burnside – achieve his management objectives through the harvest of antlerless deer and wild hogs.
Successful hunters donate their harvest for processing and distribution to area food banks, which this year means that more than 3,100 healthy, nutritious meals can be prepared and served to the needy. Seminars held during the event also helped everyone learn more about the QDMA and its mission of helping hunters and landowners enjoy better deer and better deer hunting.
Hunters traveled from as far away as Oregon, Montana and Texas to be part of the event. And two of them – Kim French of Doskocil Manufacturing and Pam Taylor of PPT Promotions, harvested their first-ever whitetails. Cajun chef extraordinaire Tony Cachere III, who annually donates his time and resources to serve as the hunt camp chef, also guided Taylor on her successful hunt.
One hunt participant, Ed Wilson, of Columbia, S.C., and his employer, the Davis-Garvin Insurance Agency, contributed $500 toward the processing fees for the donated game. The other hunters pitched in another $263 for processing.
In addition to donating his time and all of the food he prepared throughout the hunt, Cachere also made a $1,000.00 donation to the QDMA for its REACH educational and outreach program.
