QDMA Honors
New York Conservation Officer

Bogart, Ga. – – Officer Cynthia Harcher of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has been honored by the Quality Deer Management Association as its 2007 Wildlife Officer of the Year. Harcher received her award in Chattanooga., Tenn., during the 2007 QDMA National Convention and Whitetail Expo. The award honors a state conservation officer whose dedication to and enthusiasm for his or her work makes a real difference.

Harcher has been on patrol as an Environmental Conservation Officer in New York since 1992. In addition to her regular patrol duties, she also spends significant time educating adults and children on how and why her job in law enforcement directly benefits wildlife management for all species.

Last fall, she handled an inordinate number of complaints involving potential deer-related violations, including illegal baiting; hunting out of season; exceeded the bag limit; and hunting to close to homes. She has earned a reputation as being tough-but-fair to all sportsmen she has contact with.

“Officer Harcher has built an outstanding reputation for her work in law enforcement, and also in education and outreach,” said QDMA Executive Director Brian Murphy. “We are honored by the chance to recognize her as 2007 QDMA Wildlife Officer of the Year.”

Founded in 1988, QDMA is a national nonprofit wildlife conservation organization with 40,000 members in all 50 states and several foreign countries. Membership in QDMA is open to anyone interested in better deer and better deer hunting, and committed to ethical hunting, sound deer management and the preservation of the deer-hunting heritage.
